The update clarifies that people no longer need be concerned related to supply shortages for N95s. Previously, the CDC did not recommend for the general population to wear N95 respirators or KN95s, a similar type of mask made in China. The government officials feared that a run on those higher-quality masks would impact the supply in healthcare settings.
A new “real world” study in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) seemed to validate the efficacy of respirators, finding people who reported always wearing a N95 or KN95 mask in indoor public settings were 83% less likely to test positive for COVID-19 than people who didn’t.
