HIV Test Kit
At Home HIV Test for Men & Women
4U Health’s At-Home HIV Testing Service offers professional, CLIA-certified lab tests from the comfort and privacy of your home. This test detects HIV 1/2 Antigen/Antibodies in your blood. HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, can be transmitted through sexual contact, and routine HIV screenings are essential to monitor your health, prevent exposure, and stop the spread of STDs.
- Screen for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV 1 and 2)
- HIV is carried in blood. Early detection of HIV infection allows for timely medical intervention and treatment.
- HIV-1: The most common and widespread type of HIV, responsible for the majority of infections worldwide.
- HIV-2: A less common type of HIV, primarily found in West Africa, with a slower progression than HIV-1.
When To Get a HIV Test
It is typically recommended to wait at least 2 weeks after a potential HIV exposure before taking an antibody/antigen HIV test, as it may take time for the virus to become detectable. For accurate HIV screening, positive results should be confirmed with a supplemental test that differentiates HIV-1 from HIV-2 antibodies. Negative results may be retested after three months for maximum assurance, particularly if recent exposure could have led to a negative initial antigen/antibody test.
This HIV Check Might Be Right for You If:
- You want to rule out HIV exposure
- Become sexually active
- Engage in sexual activity

- Receive notification of HIV infection from a previous partner

Medical-Grade Private HIV Test Results

If your test is positive, we will conduct confirmatory testing if enough sample is available. We strongly encourage sharing your status with current and past sexual partners so they can get tested as well. Additionally, we recommend discussing your results with your doctor, who can guide you on the next steps and potential treatment options.

How accurate is a blood test for HIV?
Antibody/Antigen HIV Test
Blood tests for HIV known as antibody/antigen tests, like this test, are highly accurate in detecting the presence of the HIV virus. These tests have been extensively studied and have shown excellent sensitivity and specificity.
The sensitivity of a test refers to its ability to correctly identify individuals who have the infection (true positives), while specificity refers to its ability to correctly identify individuals who do not have the infection (true negatives).
HIV antibody/antigen tests have high sensitivity and specificity, typically ranging between 99.5-99.9%. This means that they are very reliable in accurately detecting HIV infections.
However, it’s important to note that no test is 100% perfect, and there is always a small possibility of false-positive or false-negative results. Factors such as the timing of the test (wait at least two weeks following exposure or treatment) and sample collection technique (follow sample collection instructions closely) most commonly can affect test sensitivity and specificity. For the most accurate negative results, we recommend you retest after 3 months from your possible exposure date to confirm your negative HIV status. If there are any concerns about positive results, we recommend you consult with a healthcare professional and have your test repeated.
Where is my HIV blood test performed?
Professional CLIA-Certified HIV Testing
4U Health tests meet national standards and are trusted by physicians and medical facilities across the country. We partner only with top-quality, CLIA-certified laboratories and health experts. Your at-home HIV test complies with all state and federal regulations, and our clinicians provide a physician order along with medical oversight throughout the entire testing process.
Is this a rapid HIV home test kit?
Not a Rapid HIV Home Test Kit
No, this is not a medical device designed for rapid HIV testing or instant results. Instead, 4U Health offers access to professional, CLIA-regulated testing services similar to what’s used in traditional clinics and hospitals. This HIV at home test process includes online registration, physician oversight, and simple finger-prick sample collection. Once mailed to the lab, your sample undergoes a 4th generation HIV test, detecting both HIV-1 Antigen and HIV-1/2 Antibodies—the gold standard for initial HIV screening. If you test positive and there’s enough sample available, we will automatically confirm your results with PCR testing at no additional cost, a more advanced method that differentiates between HIV-1 and HIV-2. For the most reliable negative results, it’s advised to retest at 3 months to confirm your negative status for added reassurance.
How long does a HIV test take?
HIV Test Results Time
With 4U Health’s at-home blood HIV screen, the process typically takes 2 to 5 business days to complete after the lab receives your sample.
What does this at home HIV screen test result show?
HIV Test (Screen) Result
Your at-home, professional CLIA-certified test will determine if your blood contains HIV-1/2 antigens or antibodies. Using a 4th-generation HIV test—the gold standard for initial screening—it detects both HIV-1 antigen and HIV-1/2 antibodies. If your results are positive and sufficient sample is available, we will automatically perform PCR testing at no additional cost. This advanced method provides confirmation and distinguishes between HIV-1 and HIV-2.
How soon after unprotected sex can I test for HIV?
When To Test for HIV
HIV screening after unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral sex is typically done no sooner than 2 to 4 weeks after potential exposure. For the most accurate results, testing again at 3 months is recommended to confirm a negative result and rule out a false negative due to early infection. If you test positive, a supplemental test should be performed as soon as possible to differentiate between HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies.
Can I buy this HIV blood test now and use it later?
HIV Blood Testing: Use-by-Date
Test now or later—it’s your choice. Our at-home blood HIV test includes supplies with a minimum shelf life of 5 months, making it ideal if you’re purchasing multiple tests for future retesting. Order today, and your CLIA-certified blood test will be valid for use through December 31, 2025.
Can I gift this HIV blood test to a friend or family member?
Gift Free HIV Testing
4U Health’s at home HIV test is eligible for gifting. In fact, all 4U Health medical-grade tests make great presents. The recipient who receives your gift will simply open the box, register for the at-home HIV testing service, and follow the finger-prick collection instructions. Within a few days of sending to the lab, your significant other, friend or family member will receive secure, electronic, CLIA-certified results—all thanks to your generosity.
Will my at home HIV testing be covered by insurance?
HIV Testing Insurance Coverage
Pay upfront and receive no surprise medical bills. 4U Health is not enrolled in Medicare or any other private insurance network. This HIV blood test is not eligible for Medicare or any other federal or state-funded insurance program reimbursement.
Is this HIV at home test FDA approved?
Not an FDA-Approved HIV Test Kit
4U Health does not sell FDA-approved medical devices. We offer U.S. residents (excluding New York) access to medical professional services at their discretion. Our platform connects you with a licensed medical provider who oversees the provision of CLIA-certified, Lab-Developed HIV testing. Services are provided with a physician’s order, and your lab test is processed alongside those from clinics, health departments, and other healthcare facilities, all governed by CLIA regulations to ensure test accuracy and ongoing proficiency.
Professional Lab-Developed Services
This HIV testing service includes a Lab-Developed Test (LDT). An LDT is a diagnostic test that is designed, manufactured, and used within a single laboratory, regulated by CLIA standards. Since LDTs are also regulated by New York State’s Wadsworth Center and the lab performing this test does not hold a New York State Lab License, this test is not approved for collection in New York State.
LDTs are professional services performed by professional clinicians in a laboratory, and are not subject to the same pre-market approval by the FDA as commercial tests, but they must meet the quality standards set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). LDTs are often used for specialized testing ordered by medical professionals when limited or no commercially available options exist, and the laboratory is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and clinical validity of the test. LDTs play a vital role in expanding access to medically necessary testing throughout the United States, as demonstrated by dried blood spot tests used for HIV screening.
Not an Over-the-Counter Lab Test Kit
4U Health at-home HIV testing is valid only with a physician’s order. This is not an unsupervised, over-the-counter FDA-approved kit. Our services are provided under medical license and in compliance with the general supervision guidelines for physicians. This means our physician consultants order your test and oversee the entire testing process. We provide validated collection materials regulated under the Lab-Developed Test (LDT) guidelines of CLIA, and you can connect with your ordering physician for assistance with sample collection. The sample is then mailed to a CLIA-certified laboratory for analysis. As part of the LDT validation process, sample stability studies ensure accurate processing after shipment. Should your sample fail quality control at the lab, we will provide you with complimentary recollection materials to submit a new sample. Upon arrival, licensed clinicians at the laboratory perform professional services on your sample and issue a CLIA-certified final report to both you and your 4U Health facilitated consulting ordering physician. You can trust the accuracy of your results, as the laboratory undergoes routine proficiency testing to maintain consistent performance in accordance with mandated regulations. Please note, as this service involves professional medical services including a CLIA-certified test, if your results indicate a positive HIV screening, we are legally required to report the result to your state’s public health authority.
This professional HIV testing service includes a physician’s order and oversight, along with the performance of a Lab-Developed Test (LDT) regulated by CLIA, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease on its own. Positive results require confirmation and diagnosis by a licensed medical provider not affiliated with 4U Health. The physician services and LDT described herein have not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
How is my privacy protected throughout the at home HIV testing process?
Discreet HIV Testing
Rest assured; HIPAA security standards protect your data every step of the way while determining your HIV status. Keeping your confidential data secure is our number one priority. We only share your information when required to deliver our products and services with our consulting physicians and CLIA-certified labs, or where we are legally obligated to do so. Your results are securely protected and available for review in your online portal; always secure but easily accessible only to you.
At 4U Health, protecting customer privacy is our top priority. However, as with any STI testing process—whether conducted by 4U Health or traditional in-person healthcare providers—certain positive CLIA-certified results are legally required to be reported to state health departments. This reporting helps monitor and track the prevalence of infections. If you test positive for chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, or syphilis, our network of labs may share this information with your state health department, depending on state requirements. Rest assured, your information will remain confidential, and our professional at-home STD tests provide you with the knowledge of your STI status.
