When To Test for HIV

HIV screening after unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral sex is typically done no sooner than 2 to 4 weeks after potential exposure. For the most accurate results, testing again at 3 months is recommended to confirm a negative result and rule out a false negative due to early infection. This HIV testing service includes a Lab-Developed Test (LDT). An LDT is a diagnostic test that is designed, manufactured, and used within a single laboratory, regulated by CLIA standards. Since LDTs are also regulated by New York State’s Wadsworth Center and the lab performing this test does not hold a New York State Lab License, this test is not approved for collection in New York State.

LDTs are professional services performed by professional clinicians in a laboratory, and are not subject to the same pre-market approval by the FDA as commercial tests, but they must meet the quality standards set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). LDTs are often used for specialized testing ordered by medical professionals when limited or no commercially available options exist, and the laboratory is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and clinical validity of the test. LDTs play a vital role in expanding access to medically necessary testing throughout the United States, as demonstrated by dried blood spot tests used for HIV screening.

Not an Over-the-Counter Lab Test Kit

Our services are provided under medical license and in compliance with the general supervision guidelines for physicians. This means our physician consultants order your test and oversee the entire testing process. We provide validated collection materials regulated under the Lab-Developed Test (LDT) guidelines of CLIA, and you can connect with your ordering physician for assistance with sample collection. The sample is then mailed to a CLIA-certified laboratory for analysis. As part of the LDT validation process, sample stability studies ensure accurate processing after shipment. Should your sample fail quality control at the lab, we will provide you with complimentary recollection materials to submit a new sample. Upon arrival, licensed clinicians at the laboratory perform professional services on your sample and issue a CLIA-certified final report to both you and your 4U Health facilitated consulting ordering physician. You can trust the accuracy of your results, as the laboratory undergoes routine proficiency testing to maintain consistent performance in accordance with mandated regulations. Please note, as this service involves professional medical services including a CLIA-certified test, if your results indicate a positive HIV screening, we are legally required to report the result to your state’s public health authority.
